Commonly Asked Questions

What is fascia?

Fascia is connective tissue that runs head to toe in your body like a web. Every nerve, blood vessel and cell in your body passes through fascia. It separates muscle, from muscle and organ from organ. When we develop restrictions in the fascia through physical or emotional trauma, bad posture or repetitive motions it is equivalent to 2,000 pounds per square inch of pressure on your body. Releasing these restrictions alleviates this pressure and allows for normal function of your body and its systems, as well as better posture, more flexibility and less pain.

Who is John F. Barnes?

John F. Barnes, PT is the man who developed this form of myofascial release. He has been practicing for almost 50 years and has trained therapists, doctors, dentists, scientists and many more to utilize his myofascial release principles.

How will myofascial release help me?

WE start with a full assessment and history to understand you as a person, not just your injury or issue. We take a personalized approach to your health and wellness and address the cause of your pain or dysfunction, not just the symptoms or diagnosis associated with what you are experiencing.

How many sessions will I need?

We tailor each treatment to you and because every person is different, we continue to monitor and evaluate your progress to determine the next step in your healing process. Regular myofascial release sessions have a host of benefits to improve health, maintain healthy body function and keep you focused and happy.

Why don't you take insurance?

Traditional healthcare, including insurance companies dictate what the patient needs, not the patient or clinician. Many times, people reviewing your claims do not have a clinical or medical background. We believe that people should get the service that they deserve and need. Utilizing insurance companies prevents this from happening. We can provide a bill with coding that you can submit to your insurance company for out-of-network reimbursement.

I often see people advertising that they do myofascial release. Why can't I just go anywhere and get it?

John F Barnes myofascial release is different from other forms as we follow the principles that achieve true myofascial release. Older forms of this method are aggressive and even painful at times. They also do not treat the whole person, but merely symptoms.

Can I see other healthcare practitioners (chiropractor, acupuncturist) and work out while receiving myofascial release?

We suggest initially when you begin MFR to hold off on other treatments so that you can truly experience healing. However, adding back in treatments such as acupuncture can be a good compliment to the work you will receive with MFR.

While we always encourage exercise and health, if you are playing aggressive sports, lifting heavy weights or performing some other strenuous activity, we may ask that you change to more gentle activities i.e. swimming, walking when you first start treatment. As with other practitioners, you can add back in the exercise after some treatment is received.

What does myofascial release feel like? Is it a massage?

True Myofascial Release, taught by John F. Barnes is a gentle technique that can never injure you. This is not a "no pain, no gain" approach. You are in complete control of all treatment sessions and can ask a therapist to ease up or halt at any time. We treat you by providing longer sustained pressure to reach your fascial system and wait to allow of the fascial restrictions to release. It is not a massage, as massage rebounds the tissue which does not allow the proper, scientifically proven time needed to relieve fascial restrictions. While massage can have benefits, it does not ultimately alleviate the underlying causes of your symptoms, producing only temporary results.
